Sucker Punch Productions has officially announced a sequel to PlayStation’s acclaimed “Ghost of Tsushima,” titled “Ghost of Yōtei.” The new game, set to release in 2025, introduces a fresh protagonist named Atsu and features a brand-new storyline that takes place centuries after the original game.
Originally released in 2020, “Ghost of Tsushima” is an action-adventure game that follows Jin Sakai, a samurai determined to defend Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. As Jin battles to protect his home, he faces a moral dilemma: adhere strictly to the samurai code of honorable combat or adopt unconventional, less honorable tactics to minimize casualties and repel the invaders.
The game’s multiplayer mode, “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” launched in October 2020 and was later released as a standalone title in September 2021.
Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch Productions’ communications manager, shared more details in a PlayStation blog post following the announcement at State of Play. “When we set out to create a new ‘Ghost’ game, our goal was to keep the core elements of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’: embodying a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, embracing the freedom to explore, and showcasing the breathtaking world,” Goldfarb explained. “But we also aimed to innovate. By moving beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, we focused on the broader concept of the ‘Ghost.’ Sucker Punch loves origin stories, and this inspired us to explore what it means for a new hero to don the Ghost mask and forge a new legend. This led to ‘Ghost of Yōtei’—a new protagonist, a fresh narrative, and a different region of Japan to discover.”
Set in 1603, over 300 years after the events of “Ghost of Tsushima,” Atsu’s journey unfolds in the wilds surrounding Mount Yōtei, a prominent peak in the Ezo region, known today as Hokkaido. During this era, Ezo lay beyond Japan’s formal rule, characterized by vast grasslands, snowy tundras, and hidden dangers. This untamed setting contrasts sharply with the structured samurai clans of Tsushima, offering a fresh backdrop for a new tale that Sucker Punch is eager to share.
The announcement of “Ghost of Yōtei” was one of the highlights of PlayStation’s State of Play presentation, which also featured several other major reveals. Key announcements included the November 14 release date for “Lego Horizon Adventures,” Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow in Sega’s upcoming “Sonic X Shadow Generations” movie pack releasing December 12 for the Digital Deluxe edition, a free expansion for “Astro Bot,” new gameplay footage of EA’s “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” and more.
This State of Play event came hot on the heels of PlayStation’s reveal of the PS5 Pro, set to launch in November, marking another significant moment for Sony’s gaming future.
