Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind Assassin's Creed Shadows, is rumored to be planning a co-op mode for the game following its release. The upcoming installment marks a significant RPG-style entry in the franchise, transporting players to 1500s Japan and following the journeys of two central characters, Naoe and Yasuke.
Naoe, a skilled shinobi, offers players various stealth tactics to achieve their objectives, while Yasuke, a formidable samurai, allows for direct and brutal combat encounters.
Originally slated for launch on November 15, Assassin's Creed Shadows has unfortunately been delayed to February 14. This postponement disappointed many eager fans who were looking forward to diving into the game this fall, especially after Ubisoft showcased its presence at the Tokyo Game Show last month.
The new release date coincides with a competitive lineup of major AAA titles, including Xbox's Avowed, Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, making February a crowded month for gaming enthusiasts.
Shortly after the announcement of the delay, whispers emerged regarding a co-op mode being integrated into Assassin's Creed Shadows. Insider Gaming reports that Ubisoft Quebec is working on a two-player co-op experience, codenamed "League," where players will control the game's dual protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke.
Importantly, Insider Gaming clarified that the co-op mode is not the reason behind the game's delay; it was already in development before the decision to push back the release date was made. The plan is for this mode to be added post-launch.
The last Assassin's Creed title to prominently feature co-op gameplay was 2014's Assassin's Creed Unity, which allowed up to four players to team up. While Assassin's Creed Shadows will only feature two players, the dynamic between Naoe and Yasuke is expected to provide an engaging experience.
According to Ubisoft’s preview of the game, Yasuke excels in direct confrontations, while Naoe thrives in stealth scenarios. This will encourage players to collaborate and devise strategies to navigate different challenges effectively. This will be the first major RPG-style Assassin's Creed game to include co-op, making it particularly intriguing to see how this innovative gameplay feature unfolds.
In addition to Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft is also working on a multiplayer title known as Invictus, which is rumored to launch in 2025. Beyond next year, Ubisoft is developing a project codenamed Hexe, promising a darker and more linear narrative set during the Holy Roman witch trials.
Additionally, fans are eagerly awaiting news about the heavily rumored remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, internally dubbed Codename Obsidian. Exciting revelations about these upcoming Assassin's Creed projects are anticipated sometime next year.
