The 2024 remake of Until Dawn has stirred up some controversy among fans due to the absence of the beloved song "O Death." When Sony first announced the remake, many were puzzled, considering the original Until Dawn still holds up visually and remains accessible on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility.
That said, the remake has significantly enhanced the already impressive graphics of the original game. Additionally, it is now available on PC, which is a major upgrade since the original was exclusive to PlayStation. With some fresh content added to the remake, devoted fans may find it worth the investment.
However, since its launch on October 4, the Until Dawn remake has not been without its controversies. A primary point of contention among fans is the removal of "O Death" from the opening credits and title sequence, replaced instead by a new song titled "Out of the Shadows," performed by Mae Stephens.
While the new track is pleasant, the absence of "O Death"—which played a significant role in establishing the atmosphere of the original game—has understandably upset many fans. Social media has been abuzz with complaints about the decision to replace such an iconic piece of music.
The lack of "O Death" is just one of several criticisms aimed at the remake's soundtrack. Many players have voiced their belief that the new soundtrack pales in comparison to the original, arguing that these changes detract from the emotional weight of crucial scenes. Although future updates for Until Dawn may address some gameplay concerns, it is unlikely that major changes to the soundtrack will occur based on fan reactions.
Beyond soundtrack-related complaints, fans have expressed dissatisfaction with various aspects of the Until Dawn remake. Some players have noted that the new version feels more glitchy compared to the original. Additionally, the switch from the original fixed-camera angles to an over-the-shoulder perspective has not sat well with all fans.
PC players have also been vocal about their frustration with the requirement of a PlayStation Network account to play Until Dawn. This culmination of issues has led to the remake receiving "Mixed" reviews on Steam.
There’s speculation that licensing complications, particularly given that "O Death" has appeared in other projects by Supermassive Games, like the Dark Pictures anthology, might have influenced its absence from the remake. However, this remains unconfirmed.
Despite the disappointment some fans feel regarding the remake, there is a silver lining: a sequel to Until Dawn appears to be in the works. Additionally, filming for a movie adaptation of the franchise has recently concluded, offering fans much to look forward to in the future.
