Excitement is brewing among Spyro the Dragon fans as hints suggest that Toys for Bob might be developing a new game featuring the beloved purple dragon. Spyro, who first enchanted gamers in 1998 with his debut on the original PlayStation, has a rich history that includes numerous sequels, a reboot series, and the Skylanders spin-off. The 2018 release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a remake of the original Insomniac-developed trilogy, received warm reviews and solid sales, but the franchise has been relatively quiet since then.
Spyro’s most recent appearance was as a DLC character in Crash Team Rumble, where he joined forces with his friend Elora and faced off against his nemesis Ripto. There were also rumors of a Spyro crossover in the canceled Crash Bandicoot 5, a project that was scrapped after Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time failed to meet Activision’s sales targets.
Recently, speculation about a new Spyro game has intensified. The Spyro Universe Twitter account has pointed to potential clues on the Toys for Bob website. After Toys for Bob separated from Activision in February, their new site listed various projects, including a mysterious purple section marked with a question mark next to Crash Team Rumble. This enigmatic entry has led fans to speculate that it might hint at an upcoming Spyro sequel.
Rumors about a new Spyro game have been circulating throughout the year. Following its split from Activision, Toys for Bob announced a new partnership with Xbox, which now owns the rights to both the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot franchises. Additionally, there were reports of a potential Spyro game titled Mystery of the Dragon, which was rumored to be discussed at PAX East 2024 in March.
While these rumors are not yet confirmed, and Toys for Bob has not officially announced its next project under the Xbox partnership, the Spyro franchise remains a cherished part of PS1-era gaming. A social media post earlier this year hinted at significant news for the dragon mascot in 2024, adding fuel to the speculation that a new Spyro game might be on the horizon.
