With God of War Ragnarok now available on PC, players will be pleased to discover that they can finally dial back an element of the game that was widely criticized as "intrusive" during its original 2022 release. While the game's supporting characters were generally well-received, many found them overly talkative, particularly when it came to offering puzzle hints too early.
When God of War Ragnarok launched on PS4 and PS5 in late 2022, it received near-universal praise. As the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2018 reboot and the conclusion to the Norse saga, it cemented its place as one of the standout titles of the year. Fans are already eagerly awaiting the next God of War installment, though it's likely a few years away. For now, the game's recent PC release is worth noting, especially since it introduces a much-requested feature.
PC players jumping into God of War Ragnarok will be happy to learn that the game now includes a setting to reduce the frequency of puzzle hints from companion characters. This addresses a significant issue from the original release, where companions would often provide obvious hints before players even had the chance to try solving the puzzles themselves. Even Sunny Suljic, the actor who voiced Atreus, mentioned how bothersome the constant hints were during his own playthrough, underscoring how distracting they could be.
Fortunately, Sony Santa Monica has listened to the feedback and implemented a solution for PC players, allowing them to rely more on their own puzzle-solving abilities instead of having companions spoil the fun. However, not all aspects of the PC port are positive. Many players have expressed frustration over the game's massive 175GB file size, as well as the requirement for a PSN login. These points have stirred some debate, and it'll be interesting to see how the PC version of God of War Ragnarok is received moving forward.
It’s still unclear whether this new setting to tone down companion puzzle hints will be added to the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. Given the technical simplicity of the change, it wouldn't be a surprise if it eventually comes to consoles as well. Meanwhile, it seems that this PC port may be God of War Ragnarok's final major update, as Sony Santa Monica shifts its attention to other projects, including the next God of War title, a new IP, and possibly even a spinoff featuring Atreus.
