The Simpsons: Tapped Out, a mobile game that has delighted fans for over a decade, is officially closing down after 12 years of service. The news came as an unwelcome surprise to many loyal players, leaving the game's dedicated fanbase disappointed.
Originally launched by EA, The Simpsons: Tapped Out allowed players to create and manage their own version of Springfield, the beloved town from The Simpsons TV series. Given that the show has been on the air since 1989, with roots dating back to 1987, the game had a wealth of content to draw from. Players could interact with iconic characters, businesses, and plotlines from the series. Fans cherished the game's numerous references to some of their favorite episodes, regardless of which era of the long-running show they preferred.
Unfortunately, EA recently announced that The Simpsons: Tapped Out will soon be sunsetted. The game will be removed from app stores on Halloween—October 31, 2024—although it will remain playable until January 2025. However, players will no longer be able to make in-game purchases, as microtransactions will be disabled. The final shutdown, with servers going offline completely, is scheduled for January 25, 2025. Over its lifetime, the game received an impressive 308 updates, added 831 characters, and introduced 1,463 questlines, becoming a huge hit on both Android and Apple devices.
As expected, the announcement of the game's closure has left many fans frustrated and confused. Across social media, longtime players expressed disappointment, particularly since The Simpsons: Tapped Out had recently introduced new content with the "A Bart Future" update, which ran until September 18, 2024. For many, this added to the shock, as the game had appeared to be alive and well.
Adding to the frustration, some players had just purchased the in-game donut currency, unaware that the game's days were numbered. Fans were also eagerly awaiting the annual Halloween update, a tradition that had been mirrored in the game in celebration of the show's iconic Halloween episodes.
Sadly, EA has not provided any indication that the game will be made available in another format, even as an offline version. The reasons behind the shutdown remain unclear. EA, like many gaming companies, has faced multiple rounds of layoffs over the past year, which may have contributed to the decision. While The Simpsons: Tapped Out was once a significant moneymaker for EA, it’s possible that its popularity has declined over time, and the revenue may no longer justify the costs of keeping the game running.
For those who wish to revisit The Simpsons: Tapped Out one last time, now is the time to do so before the game disappears forever.
