Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk might be hinting at a new installment in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, coinciding with the franchise's anniversary. This beloved series revolutionized the gaming landscape in the late 1990s and early 2000s, introducing countless players to the thrill of extreme sports. With nearly 20 games under its belt, including a recent remake of the first two titles, fans are buzzing at the possibility of another fresh entry.
While Tony Hawk's Pro Skater has taken a backseat in recent years, it once dominated the annual gaming lineup. The franchise kicked off with its first game in 1999, followed by three sequels before it ventured into new territory with the Tony Hawk's Underground series. After a long hiatus of thirteen years, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 launched in 2015 but received largely unfavorable reviews. However, recent developments suggest that the iconic series might be ready for a comeback.
According to reports from VGC, Tony Hawk recently took to his official Instagram account to tease a potential new game in the Pro Skater franchise. In his post celebrating the 25th anniversary of the series, Hawk expressed his gratitude to Activision, Neversoft, and the fellow skateboarders who contributed to the franchise’s legacy. He concluded with an intriguing message, hinting that "there will be a future" for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. This comes after earlier hints from Hawk regarding a new project with Activision.
The anticipated resurgence of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater could coincide with the revival of one of its main competitors. EA recently announced that Skate 4 will enter early access in 2025, marking a significant milestone as it comes fifteen years after Skate 3. This latest installment, rebranded simply as skate., will be a free-to-play live service game and will introduce a full replay system, a first for the franchise.
While major AAA skateboarding games have diminished in visibility in recent years, the indie game scene has worked to keep the spirit of skateboarding alive. OlliOlli World, released in 2022, achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, even earning a nomination for "Best Sports/Racing Game" at the 2022 Game Awards.
Other innovative titles, such as Helskate from indie developer Phantom Coast and Skatebird from Glass Bottom Games, have also found unique ways to incorporate skateboarding into their gameplay. A new Tony Hawk game would aim to uphold the legacy of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises while captivating a new generation of players.
