One of Dead Island 2’s features could take center stage in the sequel if it’s given the attention it deserves. Building on the solid foundation of zombie-slaying fun that its predecessor established, Dead Island 2 introduced several notable changes. One of the most significant was how players acquired skills, but there’s another, often overlooked aspect with untapped potential. By fully embracing it in Dead Island 3, the franchise could unlock an exciting new layer of gameplay.
Interestingly, despite its name, Dead Island 2 is set in Los Angeles, where a zombie outbreak has ravaged the city. The player assumes the role of one of the few survivors after an evacuation plane crashes, embarking on a journey to find a way out. The adventure takes players through a variety of dangerous, zombie-infested zones in L.A. Armed with weapons and the environment, players fight through waves of undead enemies in a bloody, thrilling experience that’s undeniably engaging.
One of the more subtle features in Dead Island 2 was the introduction of "Cosplay." This feature allowed Slayers to switch up their appearance by equipping different outfits. Although Dead Island 2 is played in first-person, where visual changes are limited mostly to what players see of their hands and the character selection screen, the addition of customizable outfits provided a layer of personalization not seen in the original game. While this seems like a small feature, character customization could play a much larger role in Dead Island 3 if expanded upon.
While Cosplay was a step in the right direction, Dead Island 3 has the potential to greatly improve the customization experience. In Dead Island 2, each Slayer only had access to a handful of outfits, many of which were simple recolors of their base look, aside from some paid DLC options like the Hell-A Catwalk outfits. For some players, this lack of variety was underwhelming, although there were a few standout choices for certain characters. Nevertheless, the feature felt like a missed opportunity for greater depth.
Fortunately, there are numerous ways Dead Island 3 can enhance character customization. Borrowing from games like Borderlands, the sequel could offer a broader selection of outfits, headgear, and color options for players to mix and match, allowing for more distinct character appearances. Unlocking additional outfits through challenges and story progression would also add another layer of engagement. Drawing inspiration from games like Dead Rising, the game could even scatter unique cosmetic items throughout the world, encouraging players to explore every corner.
Character customization is a naturally enjoyable aspect of any game, and deepening that experience in Dead Island 3 would bring an extra element of fun and flair.
By building upon its predecessor in areas like character customization, Dead Island 3 could set itself apart in exciting ways. The sequel has the potential to introduce a host of new features, from innovative weapons and fresh locations to creative gameplay mechanics. Offering players more customization options wouldn’t just allow them to express their personal style but also create opportunities for players to showcase their uniqueness in multiplayer sessions.
As fans eagerly await Dead Island 3, there’s plenty to look forward to, and with any luck, expanded Cosplay options will be among the many new features to explore.
