Bungie has hinted at an exciting new Metroidvania-style expansion for Destiny 2, currently known as "Codename: Apollo." Set to be part of the Codename: Frontiers content model, this expansion is scheduled for 2025 and is expected to rival the scale of Destiny's 2016 Rise of Iron expansion.
On October 1, Bungie unveiled additional information about Destiny 2 Episode: Revenant, the second episode following the launch of The Final Shape. The studio showcased upcoming weapons, gear, and content set to launch with Episode: Revenant on October 8, while also providing insights into the future trajectory of Destiny 2 in 2025.
Under the Codename: Frontiers framework, Destiny 2 will feature two medium-sized expansions and four major free updates annually. Similar to previous seasonal models, each update will introduce new content, including weapons, gear, activities, and a reward pass. The first expansion, Codename: Apollo, is slated for release in summer 2025 and will continue the main narrative following the conclusion of Episode: Heresy.
During a recent developer livestream, Bungie teased that the Apollo expansion will feature a "Metroidvania-inspired destination." Players will enjoy a non-linear gameplay experience, allowing them to explore multiple locations from the beginning. By progressing through the story and discovering specific items, players will unlock new areas for exploration, aligning with Bungie’s objective of immersing players in the game world.
New concept artwork for this destination was revealed, suggesting that players will encounter a fresh group of characters, uncover hidden secrets, gain powerful new abilities, and make significant choices throughout their journey. Bungie also mentioned that players may experience 25 to 30 distinct storylines by engaging in various activities.
- Launch Date: Scheduled for Summer 2025.
- Exploration: Players can explore the destination from the start, experiencing a non-linear approach to gameplay.
- New Characters: Meet new groups of characters and make critical decisions that impact the story.
- Diverse Story Threads: Engage with 25 to 30 different storylines throughout the expansion.
- Secrets and Abilities: Discover hidden elements and unlock new powers as you progress.
While specific details about the characters and locations depicted in the concept artwork remain under wraps, Bungie indicated that the Apollo expansion draws inspiration from 1960s progressive rock music and animated series like Netflix's Scavengers Reign. These influences have shaped the creation of a new "exotic world" that emphasizes "the joy of discovery" as Destiny 2 Codename: Frontiers unfolds next year.
In addition to the Apollo expansion, Destiny 2 players can look forward to a comprehensive armor overhaul in the Codename: Frontiers update. This overhaul aims to enhance build crafting, making stats more accessible and comprehensible for all players. Set bonuses will also be introduced, along with more impactful stats that include additional effects for players to consider.
