Riot Games has officially announced that Valorant will transition to Unreal Engine 5, with plans for "new playable experiences" that aim to broaden the game's universe. This upgrade will unlock a range of features that were unavailable in the previous engine version, Unreal Engine 4.
Earlier this summer, Valorant made its much-anticipated arrival on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, welcoming console players into its tactical hero shooter universe. With a staggering 35 million monthly players, it’s evident that gamers on both consoles and PC are eager to experience the latest updates and enjoy the game's precise and rewarding gunplay.
Despite its success, Valorant fans are still clamoring for new features like Battle Replay. The switch to Unreal Engine 5 could be the perfect opportunity for Riot Games to implement these long-desired enhancements. The new engine brings several advanced capabilities, such as the Lumen global illumination system, Nanite technology, virtual shadow maps, and temporal super resolution, which were not supported in Unreal Engine 4.
At the recent Unreal Fest Seattle 2024 event, Riot Games executive producer Anna Donlon confirmed the shift to Unreal Engine 5, stating that the team had "squeezed every ounce" out of Unreal Engine 4. While transitioning to the new engine poses challenges, Donlon emphasized its necessity, clarifying that the change won't immediately alter gameplay.
The developers are thrilled about the possibilities Unreal Engine 5 offers for the future of Valorant. Donlon mentioned that they are exploring innovative ways to expand the Valorant universe with these new playable experiences. However, she refrained from sharing specific details at this time.
- Executive producer Anna Donlon noted that Valorant has maximized the capabilities of Unreal Engine 4.
- The transition to Unreal Engine 5 will not result in immediate gameplay changes.
- Developers are brainstorming new playable experiences to expand the Valorant universe.
- Riot Games may soon host a dedicated event to unveil more details about the upcoming changes.
Towards the end of the Riot Games segment, Donlon hinted that the Valorant development team might join her on stage for a "very different sort of presentation" in the future, suggesting a dedicated event to showcase the new experiences ahead. While it's uncertain when players will notice the transition to Unreal Engine 5, Riot Games is expected to provide updates on the anticipated changes in due course.
Valorant remains one of the premier free-to-play PC games, and the upgrade to Unreal Engine 5 could further enhance the experience with exciting new features and modes. Players might look to Fortnite as an example, as its own transition to Unreal Engine 5 in 2022 introduced significant graphical improvements, ray tracing, and much more on platforms like PC and PlayStation 5.
