Following a successful inaugural season, Fallout has reached a remarkable viewership milestone on its home streaming platform, Prime Video. Launched in April 2024, the series has quickly ascended to become one of the most popular offerings in Prime Video's history.
Based on Bethesda's acclaimed long-running role-playing video game franchise, the Fallout TV series does not adapt any single game directly; instead, it presents a brand-new narrative set within the familiar universe. The show features Ella Purnell as Lucy, a vault-dweller who ventures beyond the walls of Vault 33 in search of her kidnapped father, Hank, portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan.
In this dystopian wasteland, viewers are introduced to new characters, including Walton Goggins' Ghoul and Aaron Moten's Brotherhood of Steel squire, Maximus. The storyline incorporates various factions from Fallout lore, including the Enclave, the New California Republic, and Vault-Tec, enriching the narrative tapestry.
On October 2, just six months after its debut, Prime Video announced via Twitter that Fallout Season 1 had amassed an impressive 100 million viewers globally. This milestone follows an early report indicating that the series had attracted 65 million viewers within the first 16 days of its release, making it the second most-watched show on Prime Video, trailing only The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
While the pace of viewership has slowed since the initial excitement surrounding the series, the additional 35 million viewers over the past six months is still an impressive feat.
The success of the Fallout series on Prime Video is undeniable, marked not only by its high viewership numbers but also by 16 Emmy Award nominations and a surge in interest and sales for Bethesda's video game franchise. Both fans and critics have lauded the series, firmly establishing it as one of the best video game adaptations in recent years.
Given this success, it was no surprise that Prime Video quickly greenlit a second season of Fallout, with writing for the new season already underway as of August 2024. Fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter of the series, especially after the Season 1 finale teased action set in the iconic video game locale of New Vegas for Season 2.
The triumph of Fallout has seemingly inspired Prime Video to pursue more video game adaptations. The platform will soon launch the animated anthology series Secret Level, featuring 15 stories set in the worlds of various video games, including Sifu, The Outer Worlds, and Unreal Tournament.
Additionally, Prime Video has commissioned a live-action adaptation of Sony's beloved God of War franchise, with Wheel of Time producer Rafe Judkins serving as the showrunner. This series is expected to adapt the 2018 installment of the game for the screen.
Fallout is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
