Fortnite and Disney are joining forces to create an unprecedented gaming experience, and new information has emerged, revealing intriguing details for players. While Fortnite has engaged in numerous collaborations with various brands and franchises, its partnership with Disney stands out as the most extensive. This season, titled Absolute Doom, prominently features Marvel characters, showcasing the grand scale of these collaborations.
Earlier this year, Disney made a significant investment of $1.5 billion in Epic Games, announcing plans to establish a Disney x Fortnite gaming and entertainment universe. The initial reveal trailer for this partnership was somewhat vague but hinted at several exciting features set to be introduced.
As part of this expansive gaming universe, fans will have the opportunity to create and play their own Disney-themed content within Fortnite. Additionally, the collaboration aims to bring Disney shows and movies directly into the game, allowing players to watch them using the Fortnite engine. Moreover, there are indications that players will be able to unlock Disney character cosmetics in Fortnite, enhancing their gaming experience.
In an interview with The Verge, Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President at Epic Games, provided valuable insights into the forthcoming Disney experience in Fortnite. Given their history of successful collaborations, this Disney experience will be integrated into Fortnite itself.
This partnership benefits both companies, allowing Disney to leverage Fortnite's platform rather than developing a separate game. As Persson explained, players will have access to the Disney universe through “the Disney front door or the Fortnite front,” suggesting that they can enter via Fortnite or through a separate Disney platform connected to the game.
With a plethora of franchises making appearances in Fortnite, Epic Games has implemented age ratings for certain experiences, restricting the use of specific cosmetics in those modes. However, the upcoming Disney shop in Fortnite will work differently.
While previously restricted skins couldn’t be utilized in certain game modes, the new Disney skins will follow a reverse approach, meaning some Disney cosmetics won’t be available in restricted game modes. Persson emphasized that companies maintain the right to dictate how their intellectual properties (IPs) are used and can establish boundaries for each one. For instance, if a Snow White skin were released, it would be illogical for her to appear in Battle Royale wielding Micro Dual SMGs.
Until now, the community has only received limited information regarding the forthcoming Fortnite x Disney collaboration. However, more details are expected to emerge in the coming months. According to insights shared during the D23 livestream a few months ago, Disney villains are slated to be featured in the next crossover event in Fortnite.
As excitement builds, players can look forward to exploring the magical world of Disney within the vibrant landscape of Fortnite.
