Prepare to embark on a new adventure with Indiana Jones as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle heads to consoles soon. After a brief teaser in 2021, the details of this exciting new title from MachineGames are finally coming into focus. This game promises to deliver the action-adventure thrills that have been long missing from the Indiana Jones legacy.
Despite many successful games drawing inspiration from the Indiana Jones films, such as Uncharted and Tomb Raider, the iconic archaeologist has yet to star in a truly deserving action-adventure game. Will Indiana Jones and the Great Circle be the game that reclaims the spotlight for Indy? Only time will tell, but here’s what we’ve unearthed so far.
Contrary to earlier assumptions, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will not be an Xbox console exclusive. Instead, it will be available on Xbox and PC starting December 9. PlayStation 5 players will need to wait until spring 2025 for their version of the game.
The first trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle introduces Indy in classic perilous style. Though details are sparse, the Developer Direct event provided some insight into the game’s plot. Set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the game kicks off with Indy discovering that a seemingly insignificant artifact has been stolen. This leads him into a deeper mystery involving a Nazi conspiracy.
The second trailer, showcased during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024, continues to build the narrative. This cinematic preview reveals Indy’s quest to retrieve several stolen artifacts that form a globe-spanning circle, with the Himalayas being a key location. The trailer features a dramatic scene where Indy and investigative reporter Gina Lombardi uncover a hidden treasure, only to be ambushed by Nazis. True to form, Indy exchanges witty banter with his adversaries while Gina creates a diversion for him to fight back.
The Date Reveal Trailer focuses more on behind-the-scenes content, including insights from Troy Baker, who will voice Indy. It showcases Baker’s preparation for the role and his dedication to capturing the essence of this legendary character. While there are glimpses of gameplay, no new story details are provided.
There was much speculation about the perspective of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and the first look confirms that it will primarily be a first-person experience. Exceptions include cutscenes and traversal actions like climbing. This choice reflects the developers’ expertise in first-person games and aims to immerse players in Indy’s world.
Combat in the game features a mix of melee options, including fistfights, using a frying pan, a whip, and a pistol for ranged attacks. While other weapons are not yet revealed, a machine gun mounted on a plane is seen in a set piece. It remains to be seen whether these will be the primary tools or if additional firearms will be introduced. The game also includes platforming and exploration elements to complement the combat and set-piece moments.
Puzzles play a significant role, with Indy navigating ancient ruins and interacting with various mechanisms to progress through the game.
Stay tuned as we continue to gather more details about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
