The long-awaited Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster has finally been given a release date. Announced during the Nintendo Partner Showcase, this highly anticipated collection will launch on March 6, 2025. Following the trailer's premiere, Konami confirmed that the remaster will be available not only on Nintendo Switch but also on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Originally unveiled in 2022, Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars was slated for a 2023 release. However, Konami delayed the launch. Now, fans can look forward to the collection's debut on March 6, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and Steam.
The new trailer released alongside the announcement showcases some exciting updates. Players will benefit from enhanced gameplay features, including an option to increase battle speed by up to four times and an auto mode to streamline character commands. Additionally, the remaster will feature high-resolution environmental upgrades while retaining the original 2D sprites for characters and monsters.
Significant improvements are also being made to the visual and audio elements of the games. Each character will receive a new portrait created by Junko Kawano, the original artist from 1995. The games will also include a richer array of environmental sounds, such as running water, wind, insects, and footsteps, all rendered in HD. The updated interface will include a new dialogue log, an essential feature given the extensive narratives of the Suikoden RPGs.
The announcement of the Suikoden Remaster Collection came as a surprise to many fans who feared Konami had forgotten about the beloved series. Speculation suggests that the revival of Suikoden might have been inspired by the success of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes on Kickstarter. This game, created by Yoshitaka Murayama—the original Suikoden creator—is considered a spiritual successor to the series.
Murayama had expressed interest in returning to Konami to develop a new Suikoden title following the success of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Sadly, he passed away shortly before the game's release, leaving him unable to see the success of his indie project or potentially return to lead the Suikoden series if the remaster proves successful.
