The enchanting card-collecting RPG Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is set to close its servers in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29, 2024, as announced by the developers. As of August 26, 2024, the game has been removed from the App Store and Google Play, making new downloads no longer possible.

Originally unveiled at NetEase Games' Annual Product Launch in 2020, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened debuted in China in September 2021. Following a period of global pre-registrations in February 2022 and a delayed release, the game entered early access in select regions in April 2023 before its worldwide launch on June 27, 2023.

However, just over a year since its global debut, the game will cease operations in certain regions. The decision to close servers in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania is likely tied to underwhelming performance and revenue expectations. The game generated only $3.1 million in revenue and 3.5 million downloads within its first three weeks, with half of the revenue originating from the US.

Players in Asia, including the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other selected territories in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa, will continue to have access. The game’s operations in these regions will remain unaffected by the shutdown.

The server shutdown will occur on October 29, 2024, and players in the affected regions will lose access after this date. Additionally, the current season, the Intercontinental Wizard Cup, will conclude on September 17, 2024, marking the end of new content updates.

Despite its potential, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened struggled to make a significant impact and was not managed to its fullest potential. Fans can only hope that a future installment in the Harry Potter franchise will better fulfill the magic that this game promised.
