A newly discovered bug involving the Hand of Midas item in Dota 2 is causing significant disruption, making the game nearly unplayable for those who don't want to exploit the glitch. The bug is so simple to execute that it seems almost every player is attempting to use it.
Emerging over the weekend, this bug allows players to use the Hand of Midas—an item that provides substantial gold and experience points—multiple times without a real cooldown. By effectively exploiting this glitch, players can rapidly accumulate nearly infinite gold and experience, drastically boosting their power levels far beyond normal limits.
The original version of the exploit was straightforward: players would buy a Hand of Midas, use it to trigger its cooldown, drop it on the ground, purchase a second Midas, sell the second one, and then pick up the first Midas, which would now have its cooldown reset. The simplicity of this method means that almost anyone could pull it off, and many have been taking advantage of it.
Valve attempted to address the issue with a patch late yesterday. However, within minutes of the patch’s release, players discovered a workaround using couriers, allowing the bug to continue unabated. This exploit has become so widespread that it almost seems like all ten players in a game would need to use it to maintain a fair match. If even one player decides to exploit it, they gain a massive advantage over the others.
The more logical and effective response, which Valve has used in past patches when similar bugs have surfaced, would have been to disable the Hand of Midas item entirely until a comprehensive fix could be implemented. Given the multiple methods now available to exploit this bug, it's likely that Valve will take more decisive action soon, potentially disabling the item later today as they work on a permanent solution.
Some have speculated that this bug might be linked to the recent introduction of Ringmaster, a new Dota 2 hero focused on tricking enemies. However, this theory seems unlikely, as Ringmaster has no special interactions with the Hand of Midas. It's more probable that this bug has been present in the game for some time and was only recently discovered—after all, how often do players buy a Midas, drop it, and then purchase another one?
As the community awaits a proper fix, the hope is that Dota 2 will soon return to its balanced state, free from game-breaking exploits.
