A prominent developer from Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur's Gate 3, has stirred the debate on video game pricing by suggesting that the current standard price might not be justifiable. In a recent statement, Michael Douse, Larian's Director of Publishing, argued that most games today are undervalued, and hinted that future titles, such as GTA 6, could significantly alter the pricing landscape.
The discussion around game pricing has been contentious for years. The $60 price tag for AAA games became standard with the launch of the Xbox 360 and PS3, but a decade and a half later, this figure has risen to $70 with the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. This price hike has been met with considerable resistance from gamers who argue that the industry's shift towards live-service models and microtransactions has made games more profitable, thus questioning the necessity of the $70 price point.
In 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 launched at this $70 price on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, offering extensive gameplay with 17,000 possible endings and hundreds of hours of content. Despite its value, Douse took to Twitter to express his belief that many games should command higher prices due to rising development costs. He criticized the idea of a uniform pricing structure, suggesting it doesn't reflect the "quality, breadth, and depth" of games. His comments were partly in response to the $130 price tag of Star Wars: Outlaws' Ultimate Edition, which he felt was inflated by "vague content promises" to make the base $70 version seem more attractive.
Douse also speculated that GTA 6, slated for a fall 2025 release, might set a new precedent in game pricing. Rumors have circulated that Rockstar could price the highly anticipated game at $150, reflecting its massive development budget and high expectations. While GTA 6 is expected to break sales records, whether it will indeed come with a higher price tag remains to be seen. With the game's immense hype, publisher Take-Two Interactive could potentially justify a steeper cost, but only time will confirm if these rumors hold true.
