Since its launch in 2018, Fallout 76 has embraced a live service model, consistently introducing post-launch content to keep players engaged. Nearly six years later, Bethesda continues to innovate, finding new ways to reward dedicated players and maintain their interest in the game’s core mechanics. One of the most anticipated additions on the horizon is an expansion that will allow players to transform into Ghouls—an iconic and haunting creature type from the Fallout universe.
Bethesda has announced several expansions for Fallout 76, with features planned well into 2025. Among these, the upcoming ability for players to become Ghouls has captured the attention of the fanbase. This transformation is poised to offer seasoned players a fresh experience, complete with new perks, abilities, survival mechanics, and interactions with the various factions within the game.
Ghouls have been a staple of the Fallout series since its inception, appearing in every mainline game, including Fallout 76. These creatures are the result of extreme radiation exposure, causing humans to undergo severe mutations that can lead to enhanced regeneration abilities and significantly extended lifespans. However, their grotesque appearance often subjects them to discrimination and persecution. In some cases, Ghouls can lose their sanity and become violent, zombie-like Feral Ghouls.
The idea of playing as a Ghoul has long been a topic of discussion within the Fallout community, particularly concerning future installments like Fallout 5. However, it’s Fallout 76 that will first bring this concept to life with its 2025 update.
Scheduled for release in 2025, the update will introduce a questline allowing players to transform their characters into Ghouls, but only after reaching level 50. By this point, players will have experienced much of the standard human gameplay Fallout 76 has to offer, making the transformation an enticing way to explore new possibilities.
Becoming a Ghoul in Fallout 76 comes with its own set of challenges and advantages. For instance, Ghoul players will gain complete immunity to radiation, rendering Power Armor unnecessary in irradiated areas. Additionally, they will have access to unique Ghoul-specific perk cards, further expanding the gameplay experience. The update also aligns with the lore by removing the thirst and hunger mechanics for Ghouls, replacing them with a "feral" meter that players must manage to avoid losing control.
From a roleplaying perspective, becoming a Ghoul will alter how certain NPCs and factions interact with the player. The Brotherhood of Steel, for example, will respond negatively to Ghoul characters, potentially affecting the main questline associated with this faction. However, players will retain the option to revert to human form at any time without penalty, ensuring that they won’t miss out on major content.
The long-standing presence of Ghouls in the Fallout series, combined with their portrayal in recent media such as the upcoming Fallout TV show, has sparked significant interest in these mutated beings. The Ghoul update in Fallout 76 promises to unlock a wealth of new gameplay and roleplaying opportunities, offering a fresh and immersive experience for longtime players.
