The upcoming Patch 7 for Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to bring significant updates to the game, marking what could be Larian Studios’ final major content release before they shift focus to their next project. Currently in beta testing, this update is expected to launch later this month.
Since its debut last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen a series of substantial updates, refining existing content and introducing new features. Patch 7 will continue this trend with a variety of enhancements, including user interface improvements, combat adjustments for Honor Mode, and the addition of a bard companion. Most notably, a new ending will transform one character’s storyline dramatically, giving them command over one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most iconic creatures: a red dragon.
Among the origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3—each a unique protagonist or recruitable ally—Lae’zel has been notably less favored. According to player statistics released by Larian Studios on December 5, 2023, Lae’zel is the least-played origin character. Despite this, Patch 7 might offer a compelling reason for players to explore her storyline anew.
In advance of Patch 7’s release, Larian has teased a cutscene featuring Lae’zel’s new ending. This scene depicts Lae’zel at Baldur’s Gate after the climactic battle with the Absolute. She summons and tames a red dragon—a creature linked with the Gith in the game’s opening cinematic.
Riding the dragon, Lae’zel departs the city, joined by Gith dragon riders and a fleet of nautiloids. The game’s narrator reflects on Lae’zel’s journey, emphasizing her rejection of deceit and her struggle for a rightful return home.
While specific requirements for achieving this new ending remain undisclosed, it’s clear that this development offers a substantial shift in Lae’zel’s narrative. The teaser suggests that she not only gains the support of her Gith allies but also takes control of the Absolute’s mind-flayer army. This hints at a potential uprising on the Astral Plane against the Githyanki queen, Vlaakith.
This new ending promises to give Lae’zel a more prominent role in her story. Historically constrained by Gith customs and subservience to figures like Vlaakith and Kith’rak Voss, this ending allows her to assert herself as a leader and challenge existing Gith expectations.
The prospect of Lae’zel commanding a red dragon is particularly intriguing. Although the extent of the dragon’s role remains to be seen, Patch 7 may allow Lae’zel to summon the dragon during critical battles, similar to other allies such as Dame Aylin and the owlbear. This addition could enhance Lae’zel’s gameplay experience and offer fresh dragon content.
For players uncertain about a Lae’zel-centric playthrough, this new ending offers an appealing alternative. Unlike other endings that align with or control the Absolute, this Patch 7 route avoids a purely evil outcome. The impact of this ending on Lae’zel’s character arc and the game’s overall narrative is likely to make it a standout feature among the many endings available in Baldur’s Gate 3.
