At PAX West 2024, Final Fantasy 14’s lead user interface designer Kei Odagiri provided some intriguing updates on upcoming quality-of-life features for Dawntrail. Speaking at a panel, Odagiri confirmed that popular requests such as chat bubbles and a raid strategy planner are still in development at Square Enix. Additionally, improvements to the Group Pose feature are also set to arrive in future content updates, offering even more customization options for players.
The PAX West panel came hot on the heels of a series of interviews conducted during Gamescom and a month after the launch of Patch 7.05. This latest update introduced players to the first Savage tier of the Arcadion raid series, challenging groups of level 100 adventurers. It also included a treasure dungeon, Cenote Ja Ja Gural, and brought key balance changes to Jobs like Viper, Monk, and Black Mage. The tweaks to Viper and Monk were significant enough to require adjustments to their Job gauges, as part of the overall balance improvements in Patch 7.05.
With Final Fantasy 14 continuing to expand its Dawntrail content, several long-awaited features are still in the works, bringing anticipation to a whole new level.
At PAX West, Odagiri was joined by global community producer Toshio Muroicchi and translator Aimi Tokutake to discuss exciting changes to the game’s interface and control schemes. Toward the end of the panel, Odagiri focused on the Group Pose feature, a fan-favorite tool for capturing in-game moments. He acknowledged the challenge players face when trying to take vertical portraits without sacrificing screen quality and confirmed that a portrait mode option is currently in development. This enhancement is expected to make taking stunning, high-quality vertical shots much easier for players.
Additionally, Odagiri revealed another upcoming change to the Group Pose feature, set to arrive in Patch 7.1. For the first time, Fishers will be able to enter Group Pose mode while their fishing line is cast, offering a fresh and creative way for them to capture moments in-game.
For players eagerly awaiting the much-requested chat bubbles, Odagiri had some positive news. While no release date has been set, the feature remains in active development, and he even shared a sneak peek of what’s to come. A screenshot was shown displaying different colored chat bubbles for various chat types, and players will be able to customize which chats appear in bubble form. This update will add a layer of immersion and convenience to player communication, making it easier to track conversations in busy areas.
Odagiri also provided an update on the highly anticipated Raid Strategy Planner. Designed to help players better coordinate strategies for high-end raids, the planner will be a game-changer for groups tackling the toughest content. Although no specific release date was confirmed, Odagiri assured players that it would debut during one of Dawntrail’s upcoming patches.
As players continue to enjoy Final Fantasy 14’s annual Rising event, the community eagerly awaits more news on these exciting quality-of-life updates. Whether it's chat bubbles, the Strategy Planner, or new ways to perfect those in-game photos, there’s plenty to look forward to in the near future.
