Classic Devil Summoner Games May Be Making a Comeback

Exciting news for fans of the Shin Megami Tensei series: it looks like the beloved Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha games could be making a grand return. Atlus, the powerhouse behind the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, has hinted at the possibility of remasters for these classic titles. The Shin Megami Tensei series, known for its diverse RPG formats and spin-offs, has given rise to several notable subseries, including Devil Summoner, Persona, and Devil Survivor.

In recent years, Atlus has been busy revitalizing its older titles for modern hardware. We've seen HD ports for games like Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Catherine: Full Body, and various G-Mode Archive releases of mobile spin-offs such as Majin Tensei: Blind Thinker and Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible. Despite these efforts, some Atlus classics, including the Devil Summoner series, have yet to make a return. However, recent updates suggest that might soon change.

The first hint of this potential revival came from Warrue on Twitter, who noticed an unexpected update to the Steam version of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster on SteamDB. This update, which briefly appeared and was then reverted on September 10, included achievements related to Raiho, a character from the Devil Summoner series. This suggests that Atlus might be planning to remaster the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha duology, consisting of Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army and its sequel, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon.

Could an HD Collection Be On the Way?

Originally released on the PS2 in 2006, Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha stood out from other Shin Megami Tensei games as a real-time action RPG. Its sequel, Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon, followed two years later but saw a limited release in North America. Although both games were made available as PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Network in 2014, they haven’t been re-released since then. The most recent entry in the Devil Summoner series is 2022’s Soul Hackers 2.

With Sega confirming its participation in Tokyo Game Show 2024 and listing three unannounced titles on its website, there's a strong possibility that Atlus and Sega might reveal a Raidou Kuzunoha HD Collection at the event. However, until official announcements are made, this remains speculative. Fans should stay tuned for further updates to see if these classic games are indeed getting a new lease on life.
