Sony and Team Asobi have rolled out yet another update for the critically acclaimed 3D platformer, Astro Bot. As with previous updates, the specifics of this latest patch remain a mystery, as Team Asobi has yet to disclose any details about its contents.
Released on September 6, Astro Bot is the sequel to the beloved Astro Bot Rescue Mission from 2018 and Astro's Playroom, which was pre-installed on PlayStation 5 at launch in 2020. This new installment has quickly garnered acclaim, achieving a 9.3/10 user score and a 94 Metascore on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated first-party PlayStation 5 games ever. The game has been celebrated for its engaging platforming mechanics and its nods to both classic and modern game franchises like Ape Escape, Street Fighter, Yakuza, and Persona. Despite its polished launch, Team Asobi continues to issue minor updates to address any lingering issues.
The latest patch, version 1.004, was released on September 17 for PlayStation 5 and has a modest file size of 382.5 MB, according to Push Square. Due to its small size, the installation process should be quick. However, the specific changes or improvements made by this update remain unclear, as Team Asobi has not provided any patch notes.
It's likely that this update includes bug fixes and other adjustments aimed at enhancing the overall player experience. There are also hints that future updates might introduce some of the cameos mentioned in the credits but not yet featured in the game's sandbox.
This new update follows closely on the heels of update 1.003, which went live on September 12. Like its predecessor, update 1.003 also lacked patch notes and had a similar file size of 384 MB. Prior to this update, some players reported occasional game crashes that could lead to autosave data loss, though this issue seems rare and is likely addressed in update 1.004.
Astro Bot has performed exceptionally well in sales across the US and UK, which bodes well for the future of the series. Additionally, the game's Platinum trophy hints at the possibility of a sequel, suggesting that PlayStation may be keen on expanding its library with more diverse, smaller-scale games and studios for the PS5.
Looking ahead, it's possible that Astro Bot will receive additional content updates over time, similar to Astro's Playroom. These updates could encourage players to revisit the game, uncover new features, and build anticipation for a potential sequel.
