Transformations are a vital component of the Destined One's toolkit in Black Myth: Wukong. These abilities let you morph into various bosses, harness their attacks, and sometimes even benefit from their resistances and immunities. Choosing the right transformation for specific areas or boss encounters can significantly ease your journey, especially when tackling some of the game's more formidable adversaries.
To unlock all available transformations in Black Myth: Wukong, you'll need to complete sidequests across the game's six chapters. Be aware that two transformations are easily missable if you're not careful. For a brief overview of these, refer to the Quick Reference Table at the end of this guide.
Red Tides
In Chapter 1, you can find only one transformation. Red Tides introduces you to the concept of transformations and provides fire damage to incinerate enemies. You'll unlock this ability by defeating Guangzhi in the Forest of Wolves and claiming his weapon. With Red Tides, you can transform into Guangzhi, using focus-building light attacks and fiery charge attacks. When your focus bar is full, a heavy attack after dodging unleashes Guangzhi's powerful special attack, depleting the focus bar.
Azure Dust
Chapter 2 also features a single transformation, though it’s quite easy to miss. Azure Dust is a potent transformation that becomes available after assisting the Man-In-Stone with his quest. Defeat him and interact with him again to acquire this ability. Azure Dust turns you into a massive Rock Guai with immunity to four debuffs, allowing you to withstand significant damage. While transformed, getting hit builds focus, which you can use to cast a powerful spell that knocks enemies to the ground.
Chapter 3 offers the most transformations, several of which are tied to optional sidequests. One particularly easy-to-miss transformation is Ashen Slumber, which requires activating a questline in Chapter 2.
Ebon Flow
To unlock Ebon Flow, obtain the Ruyi Scroll and defeat Yin Tiger in battle. After vanquishing him, you'll receive his sword and gain access to a third curio slot. Using his sword allows the Destined One to take Yin Tiger’s form, utilizing his Blacksmith Block ability to deflect attacks. Light attacks and blocks build focus, while heavy attacks use this focus for powerful overhead swings. With full focus, you can cast Windwalker, which enhances light attacks and lets you pass through enemies as wind when dodging. Ebon Flow converts any pre-existing focus into usable form while transformed.
Ashen Slumber
The quest for Ashen Slumber starts in Chapter 2 but can only be completed in the Pagoda Realm of Chapter 3. After finishing the Rat Prince's questline, you can claim this spell from a corpse in the Pagoda Realm. Ashen Slumber allows you to transform into a Rat Guai, using blade and flame to attack. Light attacks build focus, which can be spent to unleash flames or cast the Fiery Burst spell. This spell ends the transformation with a self-destruct attack, damaging enemies in the vicinity. Ashen Slumber also retains and utilizes focus built up before transformation.
Hoarfrost
You can acquire the Hoarfrost transformation by defeating the "Monk from the Sea" boss at New Thunderclap Temple. This boss showcases how the transformation works, using tentacles and ice attacks to build focus. As Hoarfrost, you can use tentacle strikes and sweeps to generate focus, which can then be spent on the Ice Sheet spell. Standing on snow or Ice Sheets increases your light attack’s frost bane effect, while heavy attacks throw large ice chunks, causing extra damage to frozen enemies and unfreezing them.
Umbral Abyss
The final transformation of Chapter 3 is Umbral Abyss, which lets you become the Macaque Chief. You’ll unlock this form by defeating the Macaque Chief during the Yellowbrow fight at the chapter's end and can use it thereafter. Umbral Abyss allows the Destined One to wield a fierce blade and build devastating frost bane with the Frozen Heart ability.
Chapter 4 includes two transformations, one requiring the defeat of optional bosses from earlier chapters and the other a sidequest in a hidden area.
Golden Lining
To obtain the Golden Lining transformation, you need to find the Loong Scales and defeat all three hidden Loong Bosses scattered across Chapters 1, 2, and 3. After acquiring the Loong Scales from a secret room in Chapter 2, defeat Red Loong, Black Loong, and Cyan Loong. In Chapter 4, you’ll face Yellow Loong near the Relief of the Fallen Loong Shrine. Defeating Yellow Loong and claiming its weapon unlocks Golden Lining, which transforms you into Yellow Loong. This form grants immunity to shock and offers slashing attacks with a lightning blade. Heavy attacks become charging strikes, and Variable Combos help see through attacks and build focus. With full focus, your heavy attack turns into a leaping lightning strike, which can be chained up to three times.
Violet Hail
Violet Hail can be unlocked in Chapter 4's secret area, Purple Cloud Mountain. Daoist Mi will ask you to collect an item called Violet Hail. After obtaining this item (dropped by enemies in this area) and returning it to Daoist Mi, you'll face a boss fight. Defeating Daoist Mi rewards you with Violet Hail (Spell). If you defeat the Duskveil before giving Daoist Mi the Violet Hail, you’ll miss this transformation. Violet Hail transforms you into a Worm Guai, allowing you to coat your blade with eggs that infest enemies' wounds. You can then use the Hive Mind Spell to detonate the larvae and cause damage. Self-destruction while transformed damages nearby foes and detonates larvae. Violet Hail also grants immunity to poison.
Dark Thunder
Chapter 5 offers just one transformation, tied to a quest that begins in Chapter 1. Dark Thunder is obtained by completing the Horse Guai Quest, which starts in Chapter 1 and concludes in Chapter 5. Missing any dialogue from Ma Tianba during his appearances makes this quest impossible to finish. After completing the quest by interacting with a broken cart in Chapter 5, you’ll receive Dark Thunder. This transformation turns you into a Horse Guai with a whip and immunity to Thunder Bane. The Lightning Infusion spell enhances all attacks with lightning, and strong attacks create a thunder formation that intermittently strikes enemies within its range.
Azure Dome (Secret Boss Spoilers)
The final transformation, Azure Dome, is unlocked by defeating the secret bosses: Erlang Shen and the Four Heavenly Kings. Azure Dome is a powerful form that transforms you into a Stone Monkey, retaining spellcasting abilities while swapping staff combos for unarmed strikes and heavy slams. The Stone Monkey is immune to four banes and absorbs frost or scorch blight to amplify its attacks.
