As anticipation builds for the release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, developers from Nintendo and Grezzo have revealed that the game’s map will be approximately eight times larger than the 2019 remake of Link’s Awakening. While Echoes of Wisdom promises a wealth of secrets for players to uncover, Nintendo has assured fans that its compact world design will make exploration feel more approachable.
This installment marks a significant milestone as it is the first mainline Zelda title to allow players to fully control the iconic princess. Developed by Grezzo in collaboration with Nintendo, the team previously worked together on the Link’s Awakening remake and adapted the beloved N64 classics, Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, for the 3DS in the 2010s. Notably, the art style utilized in Link’s Awakening has been revisited for Echoes of Wisdom, a detail that has certainly caught the eye of devoted Zelda fans.
In the lead-up to this new release, Nintendo has provided insights into its development process. In a recent entry in the Ask The Developer blog series, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, along with game directors Satoshi Terada and Tomomi Sano, discussed key features of Echoes of Wisdom.
When questioned about the differences in Hyrule’s appearance compared to Link’s Awakening, Terada explained that the intention was to enrich the game with substantial content that captures the essence of a "Zelda-like feeling." This ambition resulted in a world map that is eight times the size of its predecessor. Aonuma mentioned that the initial vision was for the map to be four times larger, highlighting the significant expansion.
• Developers confirm that Echoes of Wisdom features a map eight times larger than that of Link's Awakening.
• Producer Eiji Aonuma emphasized that the game’s compact nature aims to provide a less intimidating experience, differentiating it from expansive titles like Tears of the Kingdom.
• Originally, Echoes of Wisdom was intended to have a map four times the size of Link's Awakening.
• The game is set to launch globally on September 26.
• Aonuma reassured players who may feel overwhelmed by the larger map that its design will foster a more engaging experience. He and his team also discussed the exciting boss battles players will face in the various dungeons of Echoes of Wisdom, as well as the unique abilities that both Zelda and her companion, Tri, will wield during their adventures. Sano noted that while abilities like Bind can be used to send smaller enemies plummeting into bottomless pits, some actions may require a bit more finesse.
As reviews for Echoes of Wisdom start to emerge, the excitement surrounding the Zelda franchise continues to soar. It remains to be seen just how creatively players will utilize Zelda’s echoes and abilities in their quest.
