Players of Overwatch 2 were recently taken by surprise when they discovered a bug that made D.Va, one of the game’s tank heroes, much stronger than intended. As a highly competitive game, Overwatch 2 frequently receives updates that tweak hero abilities and shift the game’s meta. It’s not uncommon for certain heroes to rise to prominence while others fall out of favor with each update.
However, D.Va has remained a consistent and powerful pick in Blizzard’s hero shooter, earning the nickname “raid boss” due to the numerous buffs she has received. In 2024, she experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly after the July 9 update, which significantly enhanced tank heroes. D.Va’s Defense Matrix was boosted to last 3.5 seconds, while her Micro Missile explosions saw increased damage at 5.5 per shot. But recent player findings have revealed why D.Va has been an even tougher opponent than expected, and it all boils down to an unexpected bug.
The revelation came when players found that D.Va's Boosters had been bugged, allowing her to move faster than she should have. The glitch was tied to a stacking movement speed issue that occurred when combined with other heroes’ abilities, like those of Lucio or Juno, who can boost their allies' speed. This made D.Va far more mobile than intended, giving her a massive advantage during matches.
After the discovery, Overwatch 2 players expressed their amazement at how long the bug may have gone unnoticed. A user by the name of Aniyun_ shared the news in a tweet, prompting one reply to question whether the glitch had been present since D.Va's introduction to the game. However, the exact timeline of the bug remains unclear. Some speculate that Blizzard was finally motivated to address the issue with the release of Juno, the support hero who boosts allies' speed with her Hyper Ring ability, which could have further exacerbated the bug.
Alongside this bug fix, players had been requesting nerfs for D.Va due to her overwhelming strength in recent months. Blizzard responded in the same mid-season update that fixed her Booster glitch by reducing her mech armor from 375 to 325, while slightly increasing her base health from 200 to 225. Additionally, the patch reduced the effectiveness of armor across the board, lowering it from 10 to 7 per hit, making it easier for players to handle armored heroes like D.Va.
These changes have set the stage for a more balanced Overwatch 2 experience, though the development team remains open to future adjustments if D.Va or other heroes continue to dominate the meta. Fans are hopeful that these tweaks will restore fairness to the battlefield and allow for more dynamic gameplay.
